Equipment You'll Need for At-Home Workouts

What equipment you need for HHF at-home workouts, which programs work at home, and alternatives if you don't have everything.

Updated today

Most HHF programs include home-friendly exercise options, so you can train at home even without a full gym setup. This article covers what equipment you'll need, which programs work at home, and what to do if you don't have everything on the list.

Which Programs Work at Home?

Many HHF programs include at-home alternates, versions of exercises designed for minimal equipment. These programs are labelled Home or Gym and let you follow the same training structure whether you're at a commercial gym or working out at home.

Programs with home alternates include:

  • All of Power Happens (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced)

  • Strong Happens Beginner and Intermediate

  • Foundation Happens (all levels)

Gym Only programs (like some advanced plans) require gym equipment as listed and don't include home substitutions.

If you're not sure whether a plan works at home, check whether it's labelled Home or Gym or Gym Only on the plan's information page before purchasing.

Equipment for At-Home Workouts

To follow the at-home options in HHF programs, you'll need access to some basic equipment.

Core equipment:

  • Dumbbells — A set ranging from 5–30 lbs is recommended. If you're newer to resistance training, consider increments of 5 lbs from 5–25 lbs.

  • Resistance Bands — Both long (pull-up style bands) and short (booty bands) are useful for a variety of exercises and work well as substitutes for cable machines.

  • Swiss Ball — Choose your size based on height: 55 cm if you're under 5'4", 65 cm for 5'4" to 5'10", or 75 cm if you're taller.

  • Bench or Step — For support and a wider range of exercises.

Optional but helpful:

  • Kettlebells — Can be used in place of dumbbells for many exercises.

No barbell is required for the home versions of any plan

Note on TRX: Some programs include TRX exercises. For most plans, you can use resistance bands as a workaround, but Home+ programs require a TRX. See "Home+ Programs" below.

What About Home+ Programs?

Some programs are labelled Home+, which means they require all of the home equipment listed above plus a TRX (Suspension Trainer).

Home+ programs include:

  • Power Happens 2.0 Intermediate

  • Power Happens 2.0 Advanced

What If I Don't Have Everything?

You don't need a perfect setup to get started. Here are some common workarounds:

  • No bench? Use a sturdy couch arm, ottoman, or low table.

  • No Swiss ball? Some exercises have floor-based alternatives. Check the Exercise Library for substitutes.

  • Limited dumbbells? Start with what you have and add weight as you progress. Kettlebells, resistance bands, or even a backpack with books can work in a pinch.

If an exercise requires equipment you don't have, you can search the Exercise Library in the app for similar movements targeting the same muscle groups.
